Book Review - The Dark Is Rising
I don't want to use my usual format for reviewing the classic children's literature we read aloud, because it just doesn't fit. So instead, let's just talk.
The Dark is Rising is the second book in the series of the same name, but each of the books can be read alone as well as tying in to each other. Set in 1930s England, the books follow children as they fight against the forces of darkness in a mythological, pre-Christian quest for the 'things of power ' - the six celtic crosses in this story, but in others the grail and so forth make an appearance. In this second book the protagonist is Will, who is the 7th son of a 7th son, and the last of the Old Ones - magical semi-human beings devoted to protecting the forces of light and goodness. Will comes into his inheritance as an Old One and, guided by Merriman, (who also appears in the other stories) the head, and original Old One, he learns the magic necessary to fend off the attack of the dark.
The language is significantly more advanced than what is found in modern day YA literature, and the book is not fast moving, and involves long, descriptive passages, all of which might turn some readers off. But, man, Susan Cooper is an awesome writer. Her characters are masterfully drawn, her story compelling and full of as many layers and hidden passageways as the reader wants to see in them. This is an epic piece of children's fantasy literature.
I read this one to the 9yo only. When I asked him what he thought of it he enthusiastically said he liked it. Actually, it was probably a bit too much for him, but I just had to share it because I love it so much. And honestly we'll read it again anyway.
