I had a conversation with Samuel today that went something like this:
Me: "So, Samuel, you're going to have a birthday soon!"
Samuel: "Yeah!"
Me: "Is there something you would like for your birthday?"
Samuel: "Yeah! Um..."
Me: "Would you like a present?"
Samuel: "Yeah! I would like a present!"
Me: "What would you like as a present?"
Samuel: "I would like candies for my birthday. Candies for my birthday. I would like candies for my birthday."
Me: "You would like candies?"
Samuel: "Yeah."
Me: "How about a toy? Would you like a toy for your birthday?"
Samuel: "Yeah!"
Me: "What toy would you like?"
Samuel: "Um, you have a toy. I don't need a toy. I have lots."
Me: "Alright, but IF you got a toy, what would you like?"
Samuel: long rambling monologue about something to do with Scoop (the front loader from Bob the Builder cartoons) and Bob and Larry (from Veggietales). Possibly a picture and/or puzzle mentioned. Maybe a toy. I have no idea.
I guess I'm on my own for gift ideas.
Speaking of birthday parties (and we've been doing that a lot lately it seems) I had a big, exciting plan for Samuel's birthday that is now being flushed away due to toddler indecisiveness. He used to like the Very Hungry Caterpillar, and I found a puppet show of that book being performed in a nearby city and planned a fun party around the performance. Now he doesn't like the Very Hungry Caterpillar, and I'm back to square one. Drat.
I really wouldn't stress. Kids that age are impressed by things like balloons, and icing on cakes, and hot dogs. Save the big things for four and up. Unless you enjoy that particular kind of stress.

Yes, he'll be three. Man, even I'm easier to buy for.
